Title: More new DVD games available now!
Post by: Bob Zager on August 16, 2006, 07:47:30 PM
The Kmart store in my area now has the DVD versions of Newlywed Game, and Let's Make a Deal.  I bought the LMAD today for $24.99.  From the illustrations shown on the bottom of the box, they use footage from the original run, featuring Carol Merrill.

I haven't played the game yet, but inside the package was a brochure showing other DVD and board games from Imagination.  Among them, was a new 90's edition of the Name That Tune DVD/Board game.

The 80's one, by all reports, was awful.

At Fred Meyer the other day, I came across that $100K Pyramid DVD game. It was already on sale. I'm gonna guess clearance isn't far behind.

I actually came across an ad for the Pyramid game.  I am now under the impression that this is targeted at kiddies, since they were the ones in the commercial.

Any updates on the gameplay?  I'm anxious to see how that and the Match Game DVD game turned out...

Sure!

After choosing the number of players for the game, four rounds (actually six) are played.  They are divided up in this manner.  Round 1 and 2, followed by two quickie deals, and then Round 3 and 4.  Each person plays a different game, for a different prize in the main rounds.  The quickie deals are like those which followed the Big Deal on the show, so if you're planning a party, and want to play this game, encourage guests to pack some items in their purse or bag that they think Monty Hall might ask to see if they have, if they were going on the show.  One example:  $500 if you have a can opener.

Sometimes you might get just one cash offer from Monty to turn down the box/curtain, sometimes he'll go higher than the original offer.  Among some games played were "Beat the Dealer," where you are dealt a card from a deck, and if it is higher than the next card dealt, you win the prize, or you can take a cash offer from Monty, and pass on trying to win the prize.  Another game involved three grocery store items--bottle of cleaner, jar of pickles, can of veggies.  Each item hides a letter contained in the word "WIN!"  You choose the order of the products, that you believe will correctly spellout "WIN," and you win a prize package.  Monty offered $200 off the top, to not even check the first choice.  I had the wrong item, and he offered the same $200 to end the game entirely, or $500 if the remaining items were correct.

After the fourth round, the top two players played the "Big Deal," which unlike the show, there was no mention of trading what they'd already won, for a door.  The person with the highest total was declared the winner of the game.

Lot's of 70s series footage is used, complete with Carol Merrill, and although I didn't see any featuring Jay Stewart in this play of the game, his name appeared in the credits, so he is probably seen during some "zonk," related gags at times.  Stewart's voice is never heard, the prize descriptions do not mention brands at all (though you could see "Elgin" name for a watch, for example), and are voiced by Monty Hall himself.

It's still fun to play IMO, even though you can't find real cars these days for such low prices as quoted in the game.

One game or another turns up week after week, so Match Game and Password DVDs may be out not too long from now!

My K-Marts in this area don't have these yet. I called and asked, first they said that they did, but they meant Deal or No Deal, which I thought would happen. They are resetting still for Christmas. It's been like a month now. I swear they've got to be the slowest at resetting mods/planograms season to season. When I did resets for a major chain store (that Paris Hilton's never heard of) for a living, I did them in like a day. I went through this with them when the TPIR DVD came out, took them forever to put it out. Might check some other stores......

After seeing that commercial and the box, I'll wait until they are on clearance for no more than $5.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet.  If it has been mentioned, blame the crappy search capabilities of this board.

There is a 2nd edition Family Feud DVD game.  I found it this afternoon at a Target and Wal-Mart in this area.  This edition has the Anderson/Karn logo but no host on the box front.

Just got that at Target.  Comes in standard BigBoxOfNothing(tm), may post a gameplay vid later.

Also spotted the DoND tabletop game, along with "Mad Gab Mania."  It's like Mad Gab, but it's on a DVD (for visual clues), and it has buzzers.  Don't ask me how that works, because I didn't get it (With a $30 pricetag, I'm holding out for $20.)

Like, physical buzzers? I gotta think the lockout would be a separate device from the DVD. I'd be interesting in knowing if it's any good. (When someone gets it, that is; I wouldn't pay $30 for a lockout (I could give a rip about the game itself, which I never thought was that good anyhow), but if it's decent I'd pay $20.

/which reminds me, I need to get moving again on my Inquizitor project

Okay, here's my review after playing one game.

THANK YOU, IMAGINATION!!!!  This game plays MUCH more like the show, while giving both teams equal chances.  Also, it has MUCH better graphics (looks a lot like the final Karn set) and actual Feud music! (Yes, it's Karn music.)

Rounds 1-4: Each team gets a separate question.  Team "A" goes first, they write down their answers, and each answer is reviewed one at a time.  If it's on the board, they move on.  If it's not on the board, they get a strike, and Team "B" can steal by giving one answer.  If it appears under one of the remaining unrevealed answers, they steal the points.

Round 3 is played for double points, and round 4 is played for triple points.  The survey values are already multiplied for you.

Round 5 is the Fast Money round.  Both teams pick a player, and they play simultaneously for the 5 survey questions.  Like in the first edition, only the top answer is revealed for all 5 questions.

The team with the most points at the end wins.

I actually got a copy of this new Pyramid DVD Game and while it doesn't have the Dick Clark set, the gameplay is great!  The graphics are pretty good as far as DVD games go too.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arRo3pzDAPU (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arRo3pzDAPU\")  It's def worth $20.  I don't think it'll hit clearance once the word gets out.  It's a solid 8/10 in my book.

That's interesting, mainly because it's pretty much 180 degrees diametrically opposed to the other review we were given of this game.

My bet is that they didn't actually play the game with a group of people.  Clemon79 didn't even buy the game.  I'm not saying it will change your life, but it is a lot of fun to play.

What the hell is your point? Damn right I didn't buy it. Mainly because I have yet to see a DVD game that didn't pretty much blow anyhow, but more because of the really crappy reports.

Good on ya. Enjoy it. It still looks awful.

(And take into account that this is coming from someone who thinks Pyramid is the greatest game ever, period, paragraph, end of story.)

Oh, you're right. I thought he had.

It still looks awful, and the pauses that are part-and-parcel with DVD games would still ruin the experience completely. I'll stick with the box game, for now.

I finally did play it with a group.....not so great reception. They would have rather played the board game or had me program presentation software. The down times are just awkward, It's just slow gameplay (esp. the poor excuse for a Winner's Circle) and it just wasn't Pyramid to any of us. Guess we're partial to the classic style. Heck, we've even played Sierra's CD ROM with the PC hooked up to the TV, and that went great. Well, at least some people are enjoying it I guess....I just think they went the wrong route with this....it had so much potential.

Yeah, I think most here forgot/didn't know that title had a Party Mode. Tried it once eons ago and remember it being decent.
